About Rosacea
By Kendall Weatherman, Licensed Esthetician

Rosacea is a chronic microcirculation disorder that can be quite troubling for the sufferer. Rosacea is progressive and without treatment may evolve into advanced stages and lead to permanent skin damage.

Rosacea symptoms can include flushing, blushing, persistent redness, red patches, visible blood vessels (dilated capillaries), skin heat, red pimple-like bumps (papules and pustules), dryness, flakiness and roughness. Rosacea is usually seen in the center of the face along the t-zone (nose, forehead, chin) and cheeks, but can also affect the neck, upper chest, scalp, and ears. Rosacea sufferers often feel itching, burning, stinging, sensitivity, tightness, pain and tenderness. Red, swollen, irritated eyes and eyelids, styes, skin thickening, swelling and enlargement of the nose are additional rosacea signs. Note: Redness must be persistent and present for 3 months to be diagnosed as rosacea.

Rosacea affects approximately 16 million Americans and 45 million (almost 10%) of people worldwide. Caucasians or people descended from north Western Europe (Celtic descent) with fair skin who tend to sunburn easily are genetically predisposed to rosacea. If you have a family member with rosacea you are more likely to get rosacea than people with darker complexions. Symptoms may occur during teen years but most people experience the onset of rosacea in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Rosacea is about 3 times more frequent in women than men. Rosacea is usually seen on women’s cheeks and chin, while men exhibit more extreme symptoms like swelling of the nose.

Rosacea is classified into 4 subtypes or grades ranging from pre-rosacea with redness and sensitivity to full-blown rosacea with bumps, pimples, and swelling. Extreme cases can impair vision. Severe forms of rosacea, rosacea conglobata and rosacea fulminans, include pink to deep red facial abscesses and hard, raised, round bumps that mainly affect females. Some sources cite another type called “Neck Rosacea” which includes dilated capillaries, brownish/reddish color and a bumpy texture and appearance in a v shape. This results from UV overexposure and damage.

The exact cause of rosacea is unclear. Research has proven that the following are involved in the development of rosacea: high levels of a microscopic skin mites, sun overexposure, sunburns, extremes of heat or cold, stress, and medical disorders involving circulation, digestion, hormones and the liver. Rosacea triggers include diet, topical irritants, medications, skin treatments, vitamin and mineral deficiency, acidic blood, strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, obesity, free radical damage, aging, inflammation and an overactive immune system.

While rosacea can’t be cured, flare-ups can be controlled or prevented with consistent use of the proper skincare regimen. Rosacea sufferers need gentle products that will cool, reduce skin heat, soothe, reduce redness, heal, hydrate, strengthen and constrict capillaries. Products should also be free of irritating sulfates, alcohol and mineral oil. Also, treat skin gently for minimize redness. That means no rubbing, scrubbing or hot water. The best ingredients to treat rosacea are Green Tea, Chamomile, Frankincense, Licorice, French Rose, Guarana, Allantoin and Panthenol.
