What is Rosacea?

What is Rosacea?

Note: This discussion is not meant to diagnose or rule out any skin or medical condition.

If you’ve ever questioned whether your redness is simply irritation or something more, you may have found yourself asking, what is rosacea?

Common yet often misunderstood, rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, appearing as a persistent flush or recurring flare-ups.

As an aesthetic medicine specialist, I’ll guide you through exactly what it is, the key signs to look out for, and the underlying causes, so you can better understand what your skin may be telling you.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects the skin’s microcirculation. It is characterized by varying degrees of inflammation, visible congestion, and erythema – more commonly known as redness.

While persistent rosiness is a key hallmark, those with rosacea may also experience intermittent flushing or blushing, often triggered by specific environmental or lifestyle factors.

What Are the Different Types of Rosacea?

Rosacea can present in several forms, each with its own characteristics. While symptoms may overlap, understanding the different ones can help you better recognize what your skin may be experiencing.

Here are the signs and symptoms of rosacea, organized by type:

  • Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR):

Often characterized by persistent redness of the central face, ETR may also involve visible blood vessels and frequent flushing.

  • Papulopustular Rosacea:

Alongside redness and flushing, this form often includes inflamed bumps, papules, or pustules that come and go, often mistaken for adult acne.

  • Rhinophyma (Phymatous Rosacea):

A less common but more advanced presentation, this type involves skin thickening and texture changes, most commonly affecting the nose (a condition known as rhinophyma).

  • Ocular Rosacea:

Affecting the eye area, this form can cause dryness, irritation, redness, and sensitivity within or around the eyes.

Although these types are categorized separately, individuals may experience features from more than one subtype at the same time.

Symptoms of Rosacea

Rosacea symptoms can vary from person to person, often appearing gradually and fluctuating over time. Common signs to look out for include:

Persistent facial redness, particularly across the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead

  • Frequent flushing or blushing
  • Visible dilated blood vessels
  • Small red bumps, pimples, and pustules
  • Thickening of the skin
  • A sensation of warmth, stinging, or sensitivity
  • Dryness or rough texture
  • Raised, scaly red patches known as plaques.
  • In some cases, eye irritation or redness (ocular rosacea)

What Causes Rosacea?

While there are many potential causes of rosacea, it’s primarily believed to develop from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

This skin type can sometimes have blood vessels that are more reactive than usual, which could lead to flushing and redness, especially when exposed to certain triggers. For example, sun exposure, heat, hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, stress, and certain skincare products may be contributing factors.

Research has also explored the role of naturally occurring skin mites (Demodex), as well as links between this condition and digestive health. While these connections are still being studied, they may help explain why rosacea presents differently from person to person.

How to Help Rosacea

The key to managing rosacea starts with understanding your personal triggers, which can vary from person to person. We recommend consulting a healthcare professional and keeping track of what affects your skin to help identify potential causes.

To help support skin comfort, choose skincare products formulated for easily irritated, redness-prone complexions. While not designed to directly treat rosacea, our RS2 line is crafted with calming ingredients such as green tea and chamomile to help soothe and care for delicate skin.

Understanding what rosacea is, along with its causes, signs and symptoms, is the first step toward managing it effectively.

By recognizing these triggers and choosing gentle, supportive skincare, you can help maintain skin comfort and reduce the likelihood of visible flare-ups.
