About Sensitive Skin
By Kendall Weatherman, Licensed Esthetician

Sensitive skin is skin that is over reacts when exposed to certain stimuli. While many people claim they have sensitive skin, there is much more to sensitive skin than people understand. With sensitive skin, there are actual structural changes that occur within the skin layers along with the hyper-reactive responses.

Sensitive skin affects 50% of people according to Albert Kligman, the dermatologist who coined the term. Some believe that people are born with sensitive skin while others believe sensitive skin is made due to external forces. Regardless, sensitive skin may coexist with all skin types and anyone can have it. However, adult women who sunburn easily and freckled as children are most affected.

Sensitive skin has a number of symptoms. Sensitive skin may be pink or red and this will vary from time to time. The scientific name for this is erythema. There are cumulative symptoms of irritation that create a feeling of discomfort for those who have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin can burn, sting, and feel itchy, tight, dry and warm. Additional symptoms that can manifest in sensitive skin include color and blood flow changes, a thickening, flaky texture, rashes, pimples and dryness.

Sensitive skin has several causes and triggers. While normal skin protects us from the environment via a healthy, intact, hydrated barrier sensitive skin involves an inflammation cascade that causes thinning of the protective barrier, epithelial tissue and dermis (outermost and deeper layers of the skin). This defective barrier function leaves the skin vulnerable to the environment and leaves the nerve endings unprotected or exposed. This causes a heightened neurosensory input that causes skin to be reactive and causes a cumulative effect.

This leads to slowdown of oil and sweat production in the epidermis (outer layer of the skin). The changes in layering make sensitive skin more porous and prone to easier dehydration and significant increase in transepidermal water loss. Weakening of the inter-cellular lipids bond and capillary walls and a less efficient lymphatic system all contribute to sensitive skin.

Extreme temperatures such as cold dry or windy weather can trigger sensitive skin.

Using products that have too many ingredients or harsh, active ingredients will also trigger sensitive skin. Artificial fragrances or detergents can weaken the skin’s barrier and cause it to be more sensitive.

Sensitive skin types must avoid irritating agents, harsh ingredients or chemicals in cosmetic products. Read labels and refrain from products with sodium laurel sulfate, propylene glycol, PABA, artificial dyes and fragrances and synthetic chemicals. Excessive skin manipulation or abrasive treatments like lasers or harsh chemical peels can also aggravate sensitive skin.

Sensitive skin must be protected from the environment. A moisturizer is the best to do this. But not all moisturizers are created equally. It is imperative to choose a moisturizer that is free of mineral oil, petroleum or petrolatum along with the other irritants listed above. Instead choose one that contains safflower seed and hazelnut oils which help hydrate and nourish depleted sensitive skin. Also choose one that cont
