About Glycolic Acid
By Kendall Weatherman, Licensed Esthetician

Glycolic Acid is one of the most effective ingredients for correcting and preventing multiple skin conditions. Glycolic acid can help reverse various signs of aging and sun damage, banish acne, unclog pores and lighten dark spots.

Glycolic Acid mainly functions as an exfoliant and falls into the type of exfoliation called chemical exfoliation. Even though the term chemical implies that it is not natural, chemical exfoliation includes many different types of acids, which may be from natural or synthetic sources.

Note: Not all skincare ingredients with the word “acid” in their name are exfoliants. Key examples are hyaluronic acid, alpha lipoic acid and essential fatty acids.

Glycolic Acid, like other acids, essentially breaks down the “glue” or intercellular bonds that hold dead skin cells together. However, Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha hydroxy acid or AHA, which allows it to penetrate deeply for maximum results. This function smooths the skin, diminishes visible lines, clears clogged pores, brightens and prevents thickening of the epidermis. Glycolic Acid can even smooth recent scarring.

Glycolic Acid is used in many types of skincare products from cleanser, toners, serums and moisturizers to professional peels. However, not all glycolic acids are created equally. Glycolic acid that is from a synthetic source can cause irritation and redness that naturally sourced glycolic acid usually does not. If you had a negative experience with glycolic acid and tend to avoid it, think again. When naturally sourced glycolic acid is used properly it can benefit most skin types and conditions, with the exception of more sensitive skin types.

Glycolic Acid can reverse signs of aging and sun damage like lines and uneven skin tone by speeding up the cellular turnover rate that declines dramatically with age. This exfoliation not only reveals new, brighter skin cells but also triggers more collagen production, which will plump up lines and promote a firmer appearance.

Glycolic acid is great for blackheads and non-sensitive acne, which involve the tendency to retain dead skin cells and produce thick, sticky oil which combine to clog pores and cause breakouts. Glycolic acid essentially loosens these comedones, which helps unclog pores and prevent and correct breakouts.

Since Glycolic Acid, like all forms of exfoliation, can make your skin more sensitive to the sun’s harsh UV rays, it is important to stay out of the sun when using them. If that isn’t possible, at minimum use a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 in the daytime, such as Pevonia’s Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 and wear a wide brimmed hat or invest in an umbrella. Lastly, due the active nature of glycolic acid it is recommended to use products that contain it as directed.
