About Lines and Wrinkles
By Kendall Weatherman, Licensed Esthetician

Fine lines are one of the first signs of aging and sun overexposure. Additional factors and time can cause faint lines to become deeper, wider and more permanent in the form of a wrinkle. The good news is that proper skincare and lifestyle modifications can greatly minimize this process.

Lines and wrinkles are due to a loss of vital skin components like collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid primarily caused by aging and sun damage. Collagen, the structural protein that supports and strengthens the skin becomes hard and stiff and breaks down. After about the age of 25, we lose 1% of dermal collagen every year, which causes capillaries to have microcollapses and impairs skin nutrition. Hyaluronic acid or sugars (saccharides), which normally hydrate, plump and keep the skin layers adhered to one another diminishes which causes dehydration, a primary cause of aging. This inhibits nutritional exchange, denying skin of necessary vitamins, mineral, water, etc. Without the support of collagen and hyaluronic acid, fine lines appear.

Lines and wrinkles also result from the slowing of the cellular turnover rate, metabolism and energy that occur as we age.

Heredity plays a role with developing lines as well. People with dark, more heavily pigmented skin will show lines to a lesser degree or later in life than fair-skinned individuals as pigment provides some protection against the sun’s damaging rays. Blue-eyed, fair-skinned people lack adequate protective pigment so will show fine lines earlier in life and to a greater degree than darker skinned ethnicities.

Diet, inadequate sleep, stress, exposure to pollutants and smoking can all contribute to lines and wrinkles. A diet high in sugar or foods browned through heating or cooking of sugars, causes glycation, inflammation and aging. As our body repairs itself during the sleep cycle it is imperative to sleep seven to ten hours to stay wrinkle-free. Stress initiates free radical damage and other processes that contribute to wrinkle-causing collagen break down.

Lack of proper, preventive skin care speeds the onset of lines and wrinkles as well. Neglecting to cleanse and tone leaves irritating and pore-clogging dirt, debris, and makeup on the skin, while lack of moisturizer and sunscreen leaves the skin vulnerable to weather, UV rays and pollutants. However, cleansers and toners with harsh sulfates and alcohol dehydrate and irritate the skin and cause inflammation that contributes to signs of aging. Mineral oil that is used in many moisturizers causes skin thinning which is a main symptom of aging.

Daily use of an appropriate skincare regimen that gently removes debris, hydrates, replenishes lost components, repairs, stimulates and protects the skin can effectively prevent and correct lines and wrinkles. The best ingredients to do this include marine collagen, marine elastin, and hyaluronic acid and caviar.
