Decoding Sunscreen Ingredients

Sunscreens come in a variety of forms, ingredients and strengths. Understanding the pros and cons of each kind will help you choose one that is right for you.

SPF, or sun protection factor, means the amount of time you can stay in the sun without getting burned. For example, a SPF of 30 means you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen at all. SPF refers to UVB protection only, earning UVB rays the label “burning rays”. SPF ratings do not mean a sunscreen protects against UVA, or “aging rays” which penetrate deeply and break down collagen and other vital skin components earning them the label “aging rays”.

Physical sunscreens reflect and protect the skin against UVA and UVB rays. Natural, mineral based sunscreens like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are popular physical “blockers” that temporarily bond with the top layer of skin to help reflect UV rays off the surface. The term sunblock has been eliminated from labeling since it falsely implies that 100% of the UV rays are prevented from penetrating the skin. Titanium dioxide is ideal for people with breakouts and sensitivity as it will not irritate the skin, clog pores nor cause allergic reactions. Zinc oxide promotes healthy skin, boosts the immune system, plays a role in cell production, and reduces free radical production.

But, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide can impart a whitish appearance and chalky texture. Micronizing is an ideal way to manufacture these ingredients as it improves the texture and minimizes the white appearance without the potential harm to the body linked with nanotechnology.

Chemical Sunscreens absorb UV rays, preventing the skin from absorbing them. Chemical sunscreens may be from synthetic or natural sources. Synthetically sourced chemical sunscreens avobenzone, helioplex, Mexoryl, PABA (oxybenzone) and Parsol 1789 are widely available as they cost less to produce than mineral sunscreens. Unfortunately, synthetic sunscreens can cause irritation, breakouts, allergic reactions, a surplus of free radicals, inflammation and aging. They can also enter the blood stream, cause photo-sensitivity, attack DNA cells and contribute to melanoma. Chemical sunscreens are thought not to protect adequately against UVA rays on their own so are best when combined with physical sunscreens.

Octisalate (octyl salicylate) and octinoxate (octyl methoxycinnamate) can be naturally sourced and do not irritate the skin or cause any bodily harm. This makes them much better choices than synthetically sourced chemical sunscreens.

Broad Spectrum sunscreens combine physical and chemical sunscreens and protect against both UVB and UVA rays making them the best way to protect skin from UV damage. They must have a minimum SPF of 15 to claim that they will reduce skin cancer risk, sun damage or early skin aging, but a SPF of 30 offers better protection. There is lack of evidence that SPFs over 50 provide more protection, so the FDA requires a label of SPF 50+ for these “strength” of sunscreens. Lastly, don’t believe claims of waterproof or sweatproof as the FDA only approves sunscreens labeled as water-resistant.
