Importance of Eye Makeup Remover
By Kendall Weatherman, Licensed Esthetician

If you are like many women, you use your regular facial cleanser or worse yet, commercial makeup remover wipes, to remove eye makeup. Perhaps you opted not to use eye makeup remover to streamline your regimen, thinking that if a cleanser is good enough to take off face makeup, it should be good enough to remove eye makeup too.

However, there are several key differences between facial cleansers and eye makeup removers and a real need for eye makeup remover. A small investment of time today can positively impact the appearance of your eyes tomorrow and for years to come.

First, most facial cleansers are not formulated to completely remove eye makeup and will leave behind a makeup residue, which can cause irritation, dryness, puffiness and even cause eye infections, skin discoloration, lash damage or breakage.

Next, most facial cleansers are not formulated for the unique needs of the delicate skin, eyes and eyelashes of the eye contour. The skin around the eye area is approximately two times thinner and does not produce as much moisture as the skin on the rest of our face so needs to be treated gently in order to preserve the very fine texture and moisture in the eye area.

Most facial cleansers are too drying or harsh for this delicate skin which can lead to dehydration, one of the first culprits of fine lines and other signs of aging. Harsh cleansers can also irritate the skin and eyes, which leads to inflammation, another cause of aging. Pressure or friction must be avoided to prevent the delicate skin of the eye from becoming loose or crepey so a cleanser formulated to target eye makeup must effectively remove eye makeup without any undue rubbing or scrubbing.

The ph of the eye area is very important to maintain eye health which makes it vitally important to choose an eye makeup remover that is the same ph as tears.

While oil-based eye makeup removers effectively break down eye makeup, they can clog tear ducts and pores, cause breakouts, milia or styes plus leave an oily residue that can irritate the eyes and blur your vision. In addition, mineral oil, found in the baby oil you may have favored in the 80’s, and Vaseline or other eye makeup removers, can prevent the skin from receiving vital oxygen. This can cause skin thinning, which is a big component of aging skin.

The challenge is: How do you effectively remove eye makeup without irritating the eye area, or stretching the thin skin? Choose an eye makeup remover that is water-based, non-oily, the same pH as tears and contains lactic acid to dissolve eye makeup and regulate the pH of the eye is vital for preserving a youthful eye contour. It should also contain calming, soothing, and emollient ingredients that refresh as well. The best ingredients to do this are Lettuce, Cucumber, Elder, Ivy, Arnica, and Mallow.
Water (Aqua), Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Polysorbate 20, Lactuca Scariola Sativa (Lettuce) Leaf Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Sambucus Nigra Flower Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Flower Extract, Sodium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
Use as needed to remove eye makeup thoroughly. Moisten a cotton pad with a small quantity of this gentle remover and cleanse. Avoid contact with your inner eye area. For waterproof make-up, soak the eyelids and lashes for a few seconds with a cotton pad moist with the remover, then wipe and cleanse.
