About Combination Skin
By Kendall Weatherman, Licensed Esthetician

Combination skin is a skin type that earned its name by having two very different conditions that involve different processes, causes and solutions. Combination skin involves visible oil in the T- zone along with dry cheeks. Combination skin looks shiny on the forehead, nose and chin while the cheeks and rest of the face may look tight and flakey and feel dry.

Combination skin occurs when oil (sebaceous) glands produce excess oil (sebum), causing it to build up on your skin. This process is usually due to hormones or genetics, while drier areas can result from weather, genetics and age.

Combination skin can be exacerbated by using incorrect products and improper care. Heavy, pore-clogging products, including certain cleansers and moisturizers that contain mineral oil can increase oiliness. Cleansing too frequently, roughly, with hot water, or with harsh cleansers or toners that contain drying sulfates and alcohols can cause dryness or dehydration which dehydrates the skin and causes rebound oil production, as the skin’s way of compensating or “rebalancing” itself.

The best way to balance combination skin is to be consistent with a skincare regimen that gently removes excess oil, controls “T” zone oiliness, and boosts hydration. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize twice daily to have hydrated, shine-free skin.

Combination skin regimens should start with a light, milky water-soluble cleanser that will gently lift and entrap impurities, oil and makeup without leaving any residue. The tendency to want squeaky-clean skin needs to be squashed. If you can’t get past the need for a foaming cleanser, choose one that refrains from sulfates that can strip away oil, dry out the skin and cause rebound oil production. Great ingredients for combination skin include grapefruit essential oil, which purifies and normalizes oil production as well as lemon and pine, which refine pores.

An alcohol-free toner is a must to perfect the cleanse, remove excess oil, impurities and irritating hard water deposits. It should also help control oil, refine and hydrate the skin with ingredients like rosemary, lactic acid and aloe. Lastly, it should prepare it for the next step in your regimen.

The last step in a combination skin regimen needs to be a moisturizer that controls “T”-Zone shine, refines pores and hydrates dry areas without clogging pores.

Combination skin types with symptoms that persist or for those who want to enhance their regimen, can greatly benefit from booster products like face oils and masks. Incorporating a face oil with naturally sourced Hazelnut oil and Vitamin E will nourish the skin, seal in moisture, prevent moisture loss while and postpone aging while Grapefruit, and Mandarin Essential Oils are great for controlling oiliness.

Kaolin and bentonite clay based masks used once or twice a week will refine and unclog pores, control shine, and keep skin smooth. Exfoliating a couple of times a week with a gentle facial scrub is also helpful for keeping pores clear. If clogging won’t budge, a professional deep cleansing facial will get your skin on the road to balanced smoothness.

Corylus Avellana (Hazel) Seed Oil, Santalum Album (Sandalwood) Oil, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Tocopherol (Vit. E), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vit. E).
Apply 3 to 5 drops in the evening on thoroughly cleansed and moist skin. Massage well, avoiding your eye contour area. Best results when used in conjunction with the Balancing Combination Skin Cream or the Mattifying Oily Skin Cream in the morning.
